The graduated licensing system in Ontario is a two-step process that new drivers must complete in order to get a full G licence.

There are two levels in the graduated licensing system:

  • Level One (G1)
  • Level Two (G2)

Each level has its own rules and restrictions.

Here is a summary of the graduated licensing system in Ontario:

Level One (G1)

  • Lasts for 12 months
  • Drivers must not drive alone; they must have a qualified accompanying driver with them
  • Drivers must not drive if they have been drinking alcohol (blood alcohol level must be zero)
  • Drivers cannot drive on certain high-speed roads
  • Drivers must not drive between midnight and 5 a.m.
  • Drivers must pass a road test to move to Level Two

Level Two (G2)

  • Lasts for at least 12 months
  • Drivers have more privileges than Level One drivers, but there are still some restrictions
  • Drivers must not drive if they have been drinking alcohol (blood alcohol level must be zero)
  • Drivers must have a working seatbelt for everyone in the vehicle
  • There are restrictions on the number of passengers that a G2 driver can carry between midnight and 5 a.m. (depending on the driver’s age)
  • Drivers must pass a road test to get a full G licence
