The graduated licensing system in Ontario is a two-step process that new drivers must complete in order to get a full G licence.
There are two levels in the graduated licensing system:
- Level One (G1)
- Level Two (G2)
Each level has its own rules and restrictions.
Here is a summary of the graduated licensing system in Ontario:
Level One (G1)
- Lasts for 12 months
- Drivers must not drive alone; they must have a qualified accompanying driver with them
- Drivers must not drive if they have been drinking alcohol (blood alcohol level must be zero)
- Drivers cannot drive on certain high-speed roads
- Drivers must not drive between midnight and 5 a.m.
- Drivers must pass a road test to move to Level Two
Level Two (G2)
- Lasts for at least 12 months
- Drivers have more privileges than Level One drivers, but there are still some restrictions
- Drivers must not drive if they have been drinking alcohol (blood alcohol level must be zero)
- Drivers must have a working seatbelt for everyone in the vehicle
- There are restrictions on the number of passengers that a G2 driver can carry between midnight and 5 a.m. (depending on the driver’s age)
- Drivers must pass a road test to get a full G licence
