Getting Your Driver’s Licence
This chapter tells you what license you need in Ontario and how to get it, whether you are a new driver, a visitor, or a resident in Ontario.

Age requirement:

  • Must be at least 16 years old.

Licenses:

  • Ontario residents need a valid Ontario driver’s license.
  • Visitors with a valid license from their home province/state/country can drive for up to 3 months.
  • Visitors staying longer than 3 months need an International Driver’s Permit.
  • New residents can use their existing license for 60 days after moving.

Applying for a license:

  • Proof of legal name and date of birth required (originals, no photocopies).
  • Visit a DriveTest Centre or Travel Point.
  • Fees cover knowledge test, first road test, and 5-year license.
  • Answer questions about your health.

Proof of Identification:

  • Various documents accepted, including passport, birth certificate, immigration documents.
